The Challenge

In this project, I worked in a group.

Collaboration and communication were the keys to success in this challenge.

My teammates and I proved that respectful communication is the best way to work.

The Problem

Plants require resources and many considerations to thrive. This includes time, materials, and space. Many people who would like to care for a plant have limitations.

The Process

A white canvas was in front of us, we were free to choose what idea to work on. After ruling out a recipe app, and a recycling app, we came across the perfect idea.

This idea merged with the concept of composting and reusing. The most natural way to go was to create an app for gardening, an app that would help people from urban places to have a little nature or fresh ingredients based on their space, climate, and limitations.

The first step was collecting data, and understanding what motivates people to start and grow their own garden at home.

Understanding what specific challenges they will have in common and finding the best solution to be integrated in our app Plantasia.

Common Problems

The creation of an Affinity diagram with the data from the interviews helped us to understand better the necessities of our users, their motivations, frustrations, and goals. From there an Empathy map was created to understand and work around the user's necessities.

Understanding what other apps existed, their functionality and strengths would give us the opportunity to create something new or to improve on what's out there.

Competitor Analysis

The opportunities were:

  • Provide personalized recommendations based on user skill level.

  • Sync with phone calendar to create reminders for individual plants.

  • Provide recipes based on users' gardens.

  • Provide tips on how to compost in an urban area.

User Flow

With the understanding from the research, the User flow  focused on the sync between the phone calendar and our app. Reminders are the key for our app to be successful.

Prototype

Each of us created a prototype and we decided to test mine.

In the first part of the test, we would collect information on our users when the user registers, and in the second part, the user would create the profile for each plant and reminder.

During testing the feedback was:

  • Improve the search bar and selection of plants.

  • Refine the login.

  • Be careful with spelling and typos.

  • Create an indicator to show the user was successful at creating the reminder.

Improvements were required. One of the solutions was to combine our prototypes. Another one was to focus on one flow instead of two, and the implementing of the feedback from our users.
